Claude Code alternative: other models, other tools, or stay

Updated

COMPARE vs Claude Code

Most people look for a Claude Code alternative for one of three reasons: they keep hitting their plan’s usage limits, they want to use models other than Claude, or they want an open-source tool. If it is limits, you may not need to switch at all. If it is other models, Codex, OpenCode, Cline, Aider and Contenox all work outside Claude. If you are happy with Claude and its limits, stay: Claude Code is one of the most capable agents there is.

Why people look for a Claude Code alternative

  • Usage limits. On a Claude subscription, heavy agent work can use up your plan’s allowance quickly. See Claude pricing for current plans.
  • Only Claude models. Claude Code runs Claude models, through Anthropic or a cloud platform. Anthropic does not support routing it to non-Claude models, even through an LLM gateway.
  • Not open source. The Claude Code repository is public, but its license reads “All rights reserved”, with use under Anthropic’s commercial terms.
  • They want a different interface. Claude Code started in the terminal. It now also has VS Code and JetBrains extensions, a desktop app and a web version, so this reason is weaker than it used to be.

Can you fix it without switching?

If limits are the problem, pay per use instead of using your subscription. Claude Code asks whether to use an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY from your environment:

export ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=your-key
claude

On Windows PowerShell, use $env:ANTHROPIC_API_KEY = "your-key". Usage is then billed per token through your Anthropic Console account instead of counting against your subscription. Run /status to check which provider a session uses.

Organizations can also run Claude Code through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI) or Microsoft Foundry, billed through that cloud account. Run claude and choose 3rd-party platform at the login prompt to set up Bedrock or Vertex AI.

Per-token billing can cost more than a subscription for heavy use. Watch the Console usage dashboard for a few days before you decide.

Can I use my Claude subscription in another tool?

Yes, in Contenox, because Contenox runs Claude Code itself as one of its agents, and Claude Code signs in with your plan. Anthropic’s terms allow that: you sign in to the unmodified Claude Code program, wherever it is hosted.

What Anthropic forbids is other tools signing in to your plan directly. Third-party plugins that do this for OpenCode and others exist, and they put the account at risk.

Max, Ultra and Team plans also include monthly API credits, usable with an API key in any agent. See Anthropic.

How Contenox differs from Claude Code

Both put an agent in your project that reads files, edits code and runs commands, and both check permission rules before each action. The differences:

  • Many providers in one place. Connect several providers in Backends → Providers. The model chip on each session lists models from all of them, so you can try the same task with Claude, GPT, Gemini or a local model.
  • Rules you set in the app, not in JSON. You choose Allow, Ask me first or Block for reading files, changing files and running commands, with path and command exceptions. Rules apply to All workspaces or to one workspace, and each tool found on your machine can follow these rules or get its own setting.
  • Open source. Contenox is Apache-2.0. You can read, build and change it.
  • No Contenox subscription. The app is free. You pay your model provider, or nothing for local models through Ollama.

How your Claude Code rules map to Contenox

Claude Code settings.jsonContenox Permissions
"allow": ["Bash(npm run *)"]Run commands → Allow without asking: commands that start with npm run
"deny": ["Read(./.env)"]Read files → Never allow these paths, for example .env and .env.*
"defaultMode": "default" (Manual: file edits ask first)Change files → Ask me first

Since v2.1.283, Claude Code starts in auto mode, where a classifier approves file edits in your working directory instead of you. If you relied on edits asking first, check which mode your sessions start in.

What Contenox does not have

Contenox is a desktop app only: no IDE extensions, no web or cloud sessions, no phone app, and no SDK for building your own agents. Your Claude Code hooks, plugins and settings files do not carry over. Anthropic tunes Claude Code closely to its own models, and Contenox is a younger, smaller project.

Moving from Claude Code to Contenox

  1. Download Contenox from the download section. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
  2. To keep using Claude with your plan, open Agents, install the Claude Code preset (it needs Node 22 or newer), then sign in with your Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account. Or open Backends → Providers and connect Anthropic with an API key, AWS Bedrock or OpenRouter. Add other providers if you want to compare.
  3. Add your project with New project.
  4. Open Permissions and recreate your allow, ask and deny rules using the table above.
  5. Contenox’s own agent does not load CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md. Start your first task with “Read CLAUDE.md first”, or put the conventions that matter into the task.
  6. Choose New session, pick a model from the model chip, and describe the outcome.

Who should stay with Claude Code

  • You use Claude and your plan’s limits are fine for your work.
  • You have built your workflow on Claude Code’s hooks, skills, plugins or Agent SDK.
  • You want one tool across terminal, IDE, desktop, web and phone.
  • You run it in CI with claude -p or the GitHub Actions integration.

You do not have to choose one. Claude Code and Contenox can work on the same repository, so you can keep Claude Code for daily work and try other models on the same project.
